Week Seven - Day One: End of Day

In one sense, this discussion of the greatness of God does not really advance our understanding of Him. “Greatness” is sort of a more general way of saying all-powerful, except not as descriptive. Aren’t we just rehashing the same territory, only in a way that is really harder to get our minds around?

It helps us to remember the context of these kinds of statements from the Biblical writers. They lived in a world virtually overcrowded with gods and spiritual powers. Their experience with the real God was life-altering. It had left them with the realization that here was something absolutely unique (which they often captured by using the concept of holiness), and here was something WAY beyond anything else in their experience in potency and splendor and … in every conceivable way. This WAY beyond part of their experience with God they captured by appealing to His greatness.

Here is another chorus from 1 Chronicles. Let these words wash over you tonight.

1 Chronicles 16:23-30

(23) Sing to the LORD, all the earth;
      proclaim his salvation day after day.

(24) Declare his glory among the nations,
      his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

(25) For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
      he is to be feared above all gods.

(26) For all the gods of the nations are idols,
      but the LORD made the heavens.

(27) Splendor and majesty are before him;
      strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

(28) Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations,
      ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

(29) Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
      bring an offering and come before him.
      Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.

(30) Tremble before him, all the earth!
      The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.

  1. How did God show His greatness around you today?
  2. End your day by praying this: “Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.”
  3. Lights out!
