Week Ten - Day Four: Survey

For those of you who have been able to keep up with the offices, we have spent ten weeks together. I pray that God has begun to establish a rhythm with you. I pray that you have begun to experience the benefits of regular spiritual meals. I pray that your days have been encircled!

We will take a break for the next few weeks and pick up the trail again after the first of the year. We will again take up a survey of aspects of God’s character and personality. We will look at God’s love and a few related characteristics. Then we will look at the Trinitarian nature of God. After that, we will examine the Bible. Is it reliable and how should we think about it?

Speaking of the Bible, in our discussions over the last weeks I have encouraged you to memorize a few passages. This is the single most important spiritual discipline for me. Let’s take some time this morning to review and to add one more passage to our list. If you have not spent time with these passages at all, then start with one this morning. Refer to it throughout the day. Make a copy and put it in a pocket. Every time you touch it, use that as a time to review and keep it in front of you.

During week four’s discussion of the holiness of God, we memorized Isaiah 55:8-9. Let’s review.

Isaiah 55:8-9

(8) “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
      neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.

(9) “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
      so are my ways higher than your ways
      and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

During week five’s discussion of God’s self-revelation, we memorized Psalm 19:1-6. Let’s review.

Psalm 19:1-6

(1) The heavens declare the glory of God;
      the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

(2) Day after day they pour forth speech;
      night after night they reveal knowledge.

(3) They have no speech, they use no words;
      no sound is heard from them.

(4) Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
      their words to the ends of the world.
      In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

(5) It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
      like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

(6) It rises at one end of the heavens
      and makes its circuit to the other;
      nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Yesterday we memorized Ephesians 1:3-4. Let’s review.

Ephesians 1:3-4

“ (3) Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (4) For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.”

If you have not begun the habit of committing Scripture to memory, choose one of these to get started with today. If you have worked on these passages already, then add the following passage, Psalm 71:19-21. We looked at this passage in week seven. It is a great reflection of the greatness of God and His sovereignty and it can be a helpful cry for you at certain times.

Psalm 71:19-21

(19) Your righteousness, God, reaches to the heavens,
      you who have done great things.
      Who is like you, God?

(20) Though you have made me see troubles,
      many and bitter,
      you will restore my life again;
      from the depths of the earth
      you will again bring me up.

(21) You will increase my honor
      and comfort me once more.

Before You Start Your Day

  1. Turn your day over to God. Think through the various things you have to do and surrender them to Him.
  2. Go get ‘em!

A little sad here to see these end, however, it's great that I can refer back to them. Ps. 71 touched me today, and I appreciate the encourgement to memorize scripture. In this season, it is easy for me to get discouraged at all the commercialism, and scripture helps me look past that.
