Week One Part 2 - Day One: End of Day

When we talk about believing in God we mean more than an intellectual exercise; we mean more than a vague idea or a mental tendency. “Belief” here is a synonym for trust: like the way I trust that a chair will hold me when I sit down on it; like the way I trust my right arm to move when my mind tells it to move.

I know quite a few Christ-followers who have taken Proverbs 3:5-6 as a guiding theme for their lives. Look at those verses right now and then reflect on the questions below.

(5) Trust in the LORD with all your heart
      and lean not on your own understanding;
(6) in all your ways acknowledge him,
      and he will make your paths straight.
– Proverbs 3:5-6

So let’s think about trusting God for a few minutes before we go to sleep.

  1. Who do you trust more with the things that are important to you: Peyton Manning or your best friend? Why? What does this tell you about the nature of trust? (Football fans will understand. Peyton Manning is the very reliable quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts.)
  2. Why does Solomon add the phrase “with all your heart”?
  3. “And lean not on your own understanding” is obviously a companion phrase in Solomon’s mind. How is trusting God related to not leaning on your own understanding?
  4. Similarly, how is trusting God related to “in all your ways acknowledge Him”?
  5. “He will make your path straight” is a way of saying he will make things go well with you. Pray now by offering all that you know of your heart to all that you know of Him. Ask God to make your paths straight tomorrow.
  6. Lights out!
