Week Five - Day One: End of Day
After Tozer had written a few pages about the holiness of God he said this:
“Neither the writer nor the reader of these words is qualified to appreciate the holiness of God. Quite literally a new channel must be cut through the desert of our minds to allow the sweet waters of truth that will heal our great sickness to flow in. We cannot grasp the true meaning of the divine holiness by thinking of someone or something very pure and then raising the concept to the highest degree we are capable of. God’s holiness is not simply the best we know infinitely bettered. We know nothing like divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural man is blind to it. He may fear God’s power and admire His wisdom, but His holiness he cannot even imagine.”1
All we can do is pray for the wisdom to grasp this because “the natural man is blind to it.”
Let me end today with a reminder.
I once had someone tell me something very revealing about how they thought of the holiness of God. They said that thinking about it, “is a little too much for me, Ed. And honestly I can’t see the real, practical benefit.” I thanked this person for their honesty. He was expressing what I think many of us feel, even if we don’t know that we feel it.
So, in all of our efforts to “acquaint ourselves with God,” if at any point you find yourself wondering what this really has to do with your day or your current situation, then you need to resist that thought. A critical part of our spiritual diet will be encouraging (forcing) ourselves to think rightly about God! This is like encouraging (forcing) ourselves to eat good proteins and vegetables. We cannot live without them. We cannot be nourished without them. And neither can we be spiritually nourished without growing in our understanding of God.
God, give us the wisdom to see You as holy and help us to grow in our love for your absolute uniqueness, and Your incomprehensible perfection. May our disease be swallowed up in Your holiness so that we can be more and more like You until that day when we will know You fully even as we are fully known.
Let’s end today with some lyrics from Reginald Heber.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Lights out!
