Week Six - Day One: End of Day

In a recent Sunday morning lesson at our church, John Fontanella, our Youth Pastor, talked about spending time with God. He made the point that starting the day with God seemed to be the consistent Biblical pattern. He traced this pattern both in the Old Testament and in the life of Jesus. He said this was even the case with Old Testament sacrifices: they were usually conducted in the morning.

One of his references was Numbers 28:3-4.

(3) Say to them: 'This is the offering made by fire that you are to present to the LORD: two lambs a year old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. (4) Prepare one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight.

(Pause for dramatic effect.) Did you see the pattern?

Hint: did you notice the timing of the sacrifices? Each day ... morning and evening ...

I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Daily Office Project. It seems that from the very beginning of God’s attempts to relate to us He has been interested in His people drawing a circle around their day. He wants us to begin and end our day in a conscious salute to Him.

  1. Survey your day. Was God stirring around you in ways that you now need to recognize?
  2. End your day by praying this: “Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.”
  3. Lights out!
