Week Six - Day Two: End of Day
Let me send us out tonight with a thought.
God knows everything. Right?
Of course, we cannot possibly know everything – not even close. But I wonder if the more we know, the better. Maybe the problem with certain really smart people (scientists, for example) is not that they know too much. Maybe they know too little. The Protestant Reformers used to believe that all truth is God’s truth. There is certainly a bias against academic training in certain Christian circles, but this may be an unfounded fear. It may even be an ungodly fear. In fact, haven’t Christians spearheaded education for centuries? At least in the West this has been true. So maybe some people struggle with belief because they know too little.
Then again, maybe the problem is not that we know too little. Maybe the problem is that our knowledge is not tempered by humility.
Or maybe our knowledge is not purposeful. This must be what Paul meant when he said, “Knowledge puffs up.” (1 Corinthians 8:1) Knowledge for knowledge’s sake, or knowledge that is not tempered by humility … it’s not good. It causes the build-up of hot air!
And that makes me think that God’s knowledge must serve a purpose. So it shouldn’t surprise us when God tells Jeremiah “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
There it is, right!? God’s knowledge serves His purposes. After all, how else could God accomplish His good purposes for us unless He knew all the variables and how they would play out? His knowledge serves His power, which in turn serves His sovereignty. But I’m getting ahead of myself. More about that later.
- Survey your day. Was God stirring around you in ways that you now need to recognize?
- End your day by praying this: “Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.”
- Lights out!
