Week Six - Day Four: End of Day

Remember last week when we said that holiness has a face? Well so did God’s power!

This is the weird, almost heretical conclusion that the disciples were driven to toward the end of Jesus’ life. “The very power of God has shown up and we’ve seen it!” There’s simply no other way to understand what Thomas means when he falls down and says, “My Lord and my God!” after he has seen the resurrected Jesus.

This also explains the early creedal statements that became part of the belief structure of the earliest Christians.

Colossians 1:15-17

(15) He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (16) For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. (17) He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Do you see the allusions to Jesus as creator and sustainer in this creed? Who does that sound like?

Hebrews 1:1-3

(1) In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, (2) but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. (3) The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

Recognize the same themes?

  1. Survey your day. Was God stirring around you in ways that you now need to recognize?
  2. End your day by praying this: “Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.”
  3. Lights out!
