Meditation on John 15:1-17
Devotionals
- The passage begins with a description of God?s activity. What does the Father do as ?gardener?? Why does he do this?
- What does Jesus do? What does this say about Jesus?
- The word ?clean? is verse 3 comes from the same root word as ?prunes? in verse 2. How have the disciples of Jesus been cleaned? In what sense is this true?
- Why must a branch stay connected to the vine?
- According to Jesus, what is it like to be disconnected from him (verse 6)?
- What is the condition in verse 7 for an effective, productive prayer life?
- Do you see the love-chain that Jesus establishes? The Father loved Jesus; Jesus loved us and so we love others. What does this say about love?
- Why does he tell us all of this (see verse 11)?
- At the end of the passage, Jesus speaks of his activity on our behalf. What has he done? As a result, what kind of fruit will we bear?
- What is his core command?
- Is it possible for a branch to have a deep relationship with the vine without having a deep relationship with the other branches? What is the test of a deep relationship?
- Think about your relationship with others. If we were to take the temperature of your love what would it read? How would you describe your attitudes and thoughts about others?
- What would it mean for you to remain in Jesus today?
- Consider including this in your prayer: (a) thanks to Jesus for what he has done; (b) confession for what needs to be confessed; and (c) a plea to help us remain in him today.
