Sermon passage: 1 Kings 19
1. Elijah forgot who he was
Elijah developed a case of spiritual amnesia that led him astray. He had just seen God bring fire down and burn up the altar in front of all of the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. But when Queen Jezebel threatens his life, Elijah flees south to Beersheba and then goes out into the desert. He cries out to God that he wants to die and falls asleep under a broom tree.
When we come into God's presence, He speaks identity into us. We are His child.
2. Elijah forgot who God is
An angel then wakes Elijah up and tells him to eat two different times. Then Elijah travels to Mount Horeb and spends the night in a cave.
God asks him what he is doing there. Elijah replies by complaining that he is the only one left who follows God. God then tells Elijah to go out on the mountain in God’s presence. God shows Himself to Elijah and then tells Elijah to go and anoint Jehu king over Israel, Hazael king over Aram, and anoint Elisha to succeed him as prophet.
Remember who you are and whose you are.
