Sermon Notes

In order for the Christian life to be lived and to be benefited from, it must be practiced.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

The Christian Life is a whole new kind of life

  • Blessed, moral discipline and purity, generous, without worry
  • A fruitful life - joy
  • An abundant life
  • A life of complete devotion to God and others
  • A life "in the Spirit" marked by: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control

1 John 3:9-10

Recommended reading: The Spirity of the Disciplines by Dallas Willard

A Model

The analogy of the

  • rowboat (we work for it)
  • the raft (we float along)
  • the sailboat (we participate: we receive the wind but we have to hoist and set the sail).

Philippians 3:12-13

An Approach

  • We don't make ourselves more loving, pure or better people
  • We practice (illustration from "The Karate Kid")
So often our lives amount to the "Christian mentality" but we don't raise the sales and set them, so there is no movement. Over the next several weeks, we will explore habits and disciplines that lead to true transformation.
